Measure the deck and the route out. The narrowest gate, steepest step, and distance to the truck can matter as much as the deck’s square footage.
Measure the deck footprint
Record length and width, the highest point above grade, the number of stair treads, and the length of railings. Note whether boards are wood or composite.
Find the narrow point
Measure gates between fixed posts, not just the swinging panel. Check the gap beside air-conditioning units, pool equipment, walls, and landscaping.
Show how the deck meets the house
Photograph ledger boards, flashing, doors, and any point where the deck connects to the building. Repair work to the house should be separated from debris removal.
Mark what remains
Identify footings, concrete, landscaping, stairs, or rail sections that should stay. A simple sketch prevents assumptions on the workday.
